Alpine PT Takes it to The Top at The 2015 Missoula Telemark Ski Race Series - by brent dodge

The Missoula Telemark Ski Race Series, known to locals as the “Telechallenge” recently finished it’s 32nd season this year. Team Alpine Physical Therapy, with the sporty hybridized anatomical name of “GluTELEus Maximus” finished this year with an overall team standing of 2nd place.

Alpine’s star PT, Brace Hayden, captain of this merry band of telemark skiers, took 4th overall in the 2015 season’s total world cup points. New teammate and co-worker, Morgan York-Singer, also a rising star at Alpine, had a shortened season due to a knee injury while free skiing at Big Sky. We hope to get her back up to Snowbowl’s ‘Moonrise’ bowl next year with her knee-rehab’ed and stronger than ever.

The overall telemark race season was a good one for Team Alpine PT with fast times on rather smooth dual slalom courses and top finishers by GluTELEus Maximus racers. We would like to chalk this up to the pre-season strength training, telemark slalom skill development, and not due to the dwindling numbers of telemark ski racers.

Please check out the Facebook page or website for the TeleMark Challenge Series.

Brace Hayden would like to thank Alpine PT for their continued support (6 years and racing!) on behalf of the Missoula Telechallenge Race series. We couldn’t have such a fantastic evening sport series filled with competitive camaraderie and exhilarating slalom racing without community sponsors.

When Brace isn’t shaving the Thursday evening ice or weekend corn snow, he loves to treat skiers and mountain sport enthusiasts.  Call 251-2323 to schedule and recreate without PAIN!

Taking Freestyle Ski Training from Land to Snow - by Brent Dodge

This past weekend, Jess Kehoe, DPT of Alpine Physical Therapy was up at Snowbowl helping the Missoula freestyle ski team work on improving their on-snow warm ups.  Several of Alpine’s therapists worked with the team this fall for their dry-land training, and now we’ve taken the next step as their season kicks off on the snow.

Jess was there during that wild snowstorm this past Sunday leading nearly 80 amped up kids and 10 coaches in a dynamic warm up.  The team will continue using what they have learned in the dry-land and on-snow warmups to help prevent injuries throughout their season.

At Alpine we’re all about helping our community. In this instance, we are keen on helping to keep these kids active and healthy!

Alpine PT Takes Telemark Ski Racing Back to the Top - by Brent DOdge

Missoula has many old sporting traditions. The Missoula Telemark Challenge proudly celebrates it’s 31st consecutive year of telemark dual slalom ski racing this year. This event is hosted at the regionally famous Snowbowl Ski Area’s Sunrise Bowl each Thursday night for 6 weeks.

Alpine Physical Therapy is proud to return it’s old crew of fear-appreciative, free-heelin’  racers to the wintry slopes in 2014.  Team Glu-TELE Maximus is pleased to welcome first time racer Eric McBride (pictured below in the group shot to the far left). One of the (soft) rules of the Missoula Telemark Challenge is that each team needs a new racer on the team each year. This rule is in place to keep an old sport with a diminishing turn out each year alive and strong… as one’s power lunge muscle, the Gluteus Maximus.

Team Alpine PT has been teetering between 2nd and 3rd place this year, and the race nights have been a powdery blast. Willy Welzenbach, pictured 2nd from the right in the team photo and lunging into his tele-turn in the action photo, ended both of his races without a ski last week. Exciting stuff, great team camaraderie, and an excellent snow pack thus far for those that like to make turns on something other than blue ice.

Stay tuned for a second blog post exploring strength training advice from David Hobbs, ex-Pro Telemark Racer, and Brace Hayden, NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist and Doctor of Physical Therapy (pictured far right).  It is never too late in the season to improve one’s telemark turns on or off the slalom course.

Alpine’s physical therapists also offer the telemark racers free sports injury consults throughout the racing season.

Alpine PT in This Year's Telemark Challenge - by Brace Hayden

Special thanks for this blog post to our Tele team’s coach and spokesperson, Brace Hayden.

***************

Let’s Hit The Ice!

Alpine Physical Therapy has once again entered the Telemark Challenge, this year as “Team Glu-TELE -Maximus.” They quickly leaped from 11th place to 5th place in the ranks this week. Perhaps it was due to the shift of having our two prior weeks of ‘Team Glup-TELE-Minimus’.

We fielded a whole team of four telemark racers for one night. Two more heated races to go. The edges have been sharpened, the skis have been waxed and the Alpine’rs are ready to HIT THE ICE.

We’re proud to be a part of the 30th consecutive year the Missoula Telemark Challenge has been in the Telemark races. The historically, superlative and awesome word is Missoula now has the longest running Telemark competition in the nation.

Alpine’s physical therapists will be offering the telemark racers free sports injury consults at the races on Thursday, March 7th.

Stay tuned for updates on our standings and whether we’ve got the backside to keep “Maximus” in our name!

Team Alpine Physical Therapy Rips it up at This Year's Telemark Challenge - by Brent Dodge

Tele races have been going great for Team Alpine PT. We’re currently tied for 2nd place, and everyone has been doing well. Although team members have been sidelined with whooping cough, possibly the flu, and too much homework, we’ve all been pushing through on Thursday nights.

Sadly, tonight’s races have been cancelled due to extremely cold weather and wind chill values as low as 25 below zero. Team Alpine PT will be back to win on Thursday, March 3rd.  Photos coming next week!!

Check out the website for the TeleMark Challenge Series by clicking here.

Alpine PT Brace Hayden took last week off from the Telemark Challenge as he was ripping it up in the Canadian Rockies!  But he is back and loves to treat skiers when he is not skiing!!  Call 251-2323 to schedule and ski without PAIN!
