IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization)
Several of our physical therapists at Alpine Physical Therapy are skilled in the application of Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM). The original form of IASTM has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Gua Sha, as it is called, involves use of the edge of an object such as a spoon or piece of smooth rock to “scrape” along the skin. This treatment is highly effective in releasing tissue adhesions and scar tissue that contribute to tendonitis, chronic pain, and sport or work-related injuries. IASTM is a great adjunct to other forms of PT treatment and will often be used in conjunction with manual therapy techniques and therapeutic exercises.
Our use of IASTM involves a precision tool to stroke along the involved area. The repeated action of gliding the tool along the injured and adjacent muscles and tendons helps to improve mobility in the soft tissues, reduces trigger points in muscles, increases blood flow to stimulate your body’s natural healing processes, and can improve lymphatic drainage. Your therapist will show you specific exercises and stretches to do following the treatment and on your own. This is an integral piece of the treatment and serves to encourage your body to heal the area and improve mechanics through the entire kinetic chain in order to resume your normal function without pain.
The objectives of this form of treatment are as follows
- Address tissue health of the entire kinetic chain
- Break down scar within the tissues
- Establish healing in damaged tissues
- Improve lymphatic circulation
- Promote blood flow into the sore area
- Release adhesions within the layers of tissue
