Pain Science
Pain can be . . . well . . . a pain. Its presence can impact peoples’ lives, creating challenges and difficulties that didn’t previously exist. There are other problems with pain. It is often misunderstood, is often shrouded in myths, and is replete with numerous misperceptions. Seeking to increase our modern understanding of pain has been a priority among our therapy team at Alpine. By doing so, we’ve developed strong inroads with area doctors and other health professionals in the collaborative care of our mutual patients.
Expert Training
Our team of therapists has achieved advanced training that enables us to translate today’s understanding of pain biology in a way that helps our patients through the healing and pain management process. Our reputation for helping many patients with chronic and difficult pain conditions has steadily grown. We attribute our progressive understanding in the area of pain neurobiology to the leadership of Alpine’s Education Director, Angela Listug-Vap, DPT, FAAOPMT. Angela is one of Montana’s only Fellows of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists. As such, she oversees all aspects of training of our therapy team. Angela’s passion and interests in the modern understanding of pain biology has solidified the foundation of the approaches we take at Alpine.
Clinic Model
The book Explain Pain by world renowned physiotherapist David Butler and co-author and clinical scientist Lorimer Mosely provides the foundation of our model when working with patients who are in the midst of their pain journeys. From their work, we understand Lorimer Mosely’s words: “Tissue damage is neither necessary nor sufficient for pain.” Moreover, the presence of pain boils down to whether the brain perceives danger or is seeking to protect the problem area.
Utilizing this modern backdrop of pain biology, we seek to help our patients deal with pain effectively by understanding pain and how they can change their view of pain, reducing its threat and improving its management. Within our model, we are able to choose from a host of innovative and effective treatment approaches. A sampling of these options is included here, along with a webpage dedicated to each topic. Here at Alpine, we’ve done the research and training, yielding the skills to apply today’s model and treatments. When it comes to helping you with your pain journey, consider getting expert help from Missoula’s expert physical therapists.
